I speak or understand most of the languages that are on the welcome board” Flora pointed out (there’s a few!) She is very intelligent, I have to agree.įlora opened Puerto Pirata in Puerto Viejo in the end of June 2012 (just after my first visit to the Caribbean beaches of Costa Rica) after she bought it from a Spanish guy who did mostly sub sandwiches and had a little coca-cola fridge and that was it so she changed a lot of things. ”I am half-Italian and half-Nigerian, and I moved in here from the Netherlands. So we started chatting and it turned out it was the owner of the Puerto Pirata Deli herself – Flora. When walking out of the deli, I started taking photos of the ball and the ice cream in front of the deli to use them on my Fit when Traveling blog.Ī sweet girl came out asking if I was going to use the photos and if yes, where. I bought vegan ice cream and a vegan chocolate oatmeal ball. One afternoon, I was craving for something sweet (oh Gosh, again?!) and we were just strolling along the coastline when next to a scuba diving place I spotted a little corner deli – Puerto Pirata Deli. I was trying to be vegan as much as I could, but finding a place with a big portion of a great salad, and for a good price, is not always easy. It does not store any personal data. When we were staying at Cariblue Hotel for a few days with my friend Pablo, we walked around Puerto Viejo a few times looking for the best restaurants. To have found such an exceptional Italian culinary experience – quite frankly, in the middle of a remote part of the Caribbean coast was nothing short of serendipity. Even after several weeks, countless mentions to friends and lots of recommendations to people heading on holiday to Costa Rica, we still reminisce about La Pecora Nera from time to time. This was such an other-worldly experience we had to do it twice, just to make sure it wasn’t a complete fluke the first time around. The food is exquisite: thinly sliced carpaccio, risotto in black squid ink, seafood linguini with chilli and grilled fish were some of the highlights of our visit, all authentically prepared with passion and soul. From the lovely French waitress who concocted several rounds of killer mojitos, to the chef and owner Ilario who came over to introduce himself and ask us what kind of food we were in the mood for, the atmosphere was homely and utterly charming. Hidden beneath a canopy of trees under a half indoor, half outdoor teak-clad roof, we took refuge from the rain to the warm welcome of the staff. As the rain continued to pelt down on us, we made the short walk from the resort down a dark, muddy lane next door, to find what the receptionist had described to us as a typical Italian restaurant. Arriving at Le Cameleon in the dark, after hours of driving in torrential rain would make even the most chipper of souls tired, grumpy and in my case, desperately in need of some comfort food.
